Original, NOS, aftermarket, reproduction and used parts

The same part can be sold in several forms. Knowing the difference helps you choose, and explains the labels on our part pages.

The kinds of part you will find

Original (OEM)
Made for and sold by the tractor’s manufacturer, usually through its dealers. Often the best fit, sometimes the most expensive.
New old stock (NOS)
Original parts made years ago and never used. Correct for a restoration, but supply is fixed and prices rise as it runs out.
Aftermarket
New parts made by other companies to fit. Quality and accuracy vary from excellent to poor.
Reproduction
Made to copy the original’s appearance as well as its fit, for restorers. Often small batches that sell out.
Used and salvage
Removed from other machines. Correct original parts, in whatever condition they have survived.
Rebuilt
Used assemblies restored to working order, typically gauges, pumps and other mechanical units.

Superseded part numbers

Manufacturers replace part numbers over time. A number may be superseded by a newer one, sometimes several times. The latest part usually fits and works, but it may not look like the original, which matters for a restoration. Our part pages show the supersession chain where we have found it.

How we label what we know

Every fact on a PorkForge part page carries a status, so you can judge how far to rely on it:

  • Verified seen on a manufacturer or dealer source.
  • Reported from one secondary source, such as an aftermarket listing or an owners’ forum.
  • Inferred worked out from other facts and not stated by any source.
  • Unknown not yet established.

We also record whether the original is still sold:

  • Available the manufacturer still sells it.
  • No longer available discontinued or obsolete.
  • Assembly only only sold as part of a larger assembly.
  • Dealer only not sold to the public.
  • Back-ordered listed, but on long backorder.

Choosing

  • Show restorations: original, NOS or a good reproduction, matched to the serial number range.
  • Working tractors: whatever fits and lasts, including superseded and aftermarket parts.
  • Anything safety-related (steering, brakes, hitches, PTO guards): original or a reputable new part only, never a cosmetic copy.
