Covers versus latches
Covers and lids keep dirt and water off the battery. Latches and clamps hold the battery or the lid in place and are often spring steel, so they are assessed separately and may not suit reproduction in plastic.
Material considerations
Battery acid and heat attack many plastics. Material choice is checked against these conditions before any cover is offered, and parts that must carry the weight of the battery are not reproduced in plastic.
Ventilation and corrosion
Lead-acid batteries give off gas while charging, so battery boxes need ventilation. A replacement cover must keep any vents or gaps the original had; never seal a battery in completely.
Acid fumes corrode steel covers from the underside and around the hinges and mounting points. When you measure an old cover, check those areas: corrosion can hide how much material is left, and the mounting holes may have worn oval.
What to measure before you request one
- Outer footprint of the cover and its depth
- Position and size of hinges, latches and mounting holes
- The battery group size fitted, if known
- Photos of the cover closed and open, and of the latch mechanism
